22 Hindus in two small villages in Indian-administered Kashmir on
Monday, officials said. The massacre, one of the biggest in recent
months, took place just days before Indian Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh holds talks with Kashmiri separatists in New Delhi and later
travels to the violent region for a "roundtable" conference
with Kashmiris.

A woman gets 12–year jail sentence for butchering a cow
|
|
Kathmandu (AsiaNews) – A Buddhist woman, Kripa Bhoteni, was
sentenced to 12 years in jail by a court in Sankhuwasabha,
north-eastern Nepal, for butchering a cow. The police launched its
investigation two weeks ago and the legal system was quick in passing
judgement. In the Himalayan kingdom slaughtering bovines is considered
a very serious crime that can be punished with the death penalty.
“The court was indeed quick in dealing with the case. But it is mind
boggling that our Nepalese courts rarely show such urgency in murder
cases. It is a tragedy that the life of cow is more important than a
human life,” lamented Pawan Shrestha, a Buddhist human rights activist. For
Shrestha, although Nepal is officially a Hindu Kingdom, “only 20 per
cent belong to Vedic-Sanatani Hinduism, which considers beef eating a
taboo and a great sin. Most people practice other cults like Buddhism
and Animism”.
“Butchering cows is banned in Nepal,” he added, “but the truth is
that almost all the people living in the high Himalayas near Tibet are
of Tibetan-Mongol stock, followers of Lamaism or Mahayana-Tantrik
Buddhism which do not prohibit eating beef and killing cows. Despite
the ban locals do kill cows for meat. Actually, cows are the main
source of meat in this cold region.”

Indian cult kills children for goddess
|
|
A painted image of the Hindu goddess Kali is propped up against a stone
in the dirt, her long red tongue goading terrified worshippers into
submission. From one of her eight flailing arms a severed head dangles,
her neck is adorned by a necklace of bleached human skulls. There are
bloodstains on the cracked wall behind the terrible postcard-size image
and, around the dark room, splattered gore on the heavy wooden
furniture. These dark marks bear witness to a child sacrificed in the
name of the abominable goddess. Through
the doorway, in the distance, colourfully dressed women are bent
double, toiling in the fields, their faces worn and wrinkled from the
sun, their hands cracked from digging at the dry earth from dawn until
dusk.

Hindus caught in backlash after July 7 terror attacks
|
|
A rising number of Hindus are the victims of hate crimes, partly as
a backlash from the London suicide bombings, Britain's largest Hindu
organisation has said.
A telephone hotline to report attacks is being set up to help the 700,000 Hindus in this country.
Ramesh Kallidai, secretary general of the Hindu Forum of Britain,
said "hate crime" incidents ranged from verbal and physical attacks on
worshippers to graffiti and vandalism at Hindu temples. In one of the
most recent attacks, paving slabs with swastikas scratched on them were
thrown through the windows at a hall in Basingstoke, Hampshire, while a
religious meeting was taking place.

Where have all Brahmin godmen gone?
|
|
NEW DELHI: Prince Siddhartha who
deserted his wife when she was not looking, made a confession years later. "I
stealthily slipped out of the bedroom that night. I thought she was an obstacle
in my spiritual pursuit. But looking back, I realise, it was a mistake. For a
person who has his goals fixed, obstacles never happen."He was implying that for
the bliss of salvation, one need not run away from the material world and its
most slandered component — the wife.
Yet the charm of an
ashram and the draw of a mutt has been compelling in this country. And for
centuries, Brahmin orders have been the greatest beneficiaries of this nation's
obsession with mediating mediums. But now, the financial and social clout of
Brahmin spirituality has been dwarfed by the rise of Dravidians and other
non-Brahmins. Hinduism is certainly not in the peril anymore of being considered
a Brahmin idea but the cream caste's spiritual heads have lost so much mass
support that the outcry after the arrest of Kanchi Acharya (often described as
the spiritual head of the Hindus) was essentially a Brahmin anger.

Hindu fundamentalists storm Christian prayer meeting
|
|
Lucknow (AsiaNews) – Hindu fundamentalists forced their way into a large Christian prayer meeting on January 30 in Lucknow, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, central India.
Hundreds of worshippers had come from nearby towns and villages to take part in the rally, but, waving saffron flags (saffron being the colour symbolises Hinduism), members of Bajarang Dal, a Hindu fundamentalist group, stormed the premises and interrupted the event.
“These Christian rallies are aimed at conversions,” the activists said. “These Fathers lure the people with gifts of land, money, food and clothes. We strongly protest against such conversions; we are prepared to fight against such tactics of forced conversions”.
Questioned by the police, Rev Rajendra Prasad, a Protestant minister who had organised the event, said: “It is true that I am preaching in the name of Christ, but I am not converting anybody. I neither guarantee, nor promise healing.”

Danger of violence after Hindu 'Pope' arrested
|
|
Madras (AsiaNews/Agencies) - The arrest of Jayendra Saraswathi, one of India's top Hindu religious leaders, on charges of first-degree murder has led to threats of a nation-wide protest by the religious right. Nicknamed the Hindu 'Pope', the 71-year-old Saraswathi is accused of ordering the murder of Thiru Sankararaman, a once-close aide who fell out with him last year.
According to C. Premkumar, police chief in Kanchipuram (70 km south of Madras), "several documents and details of bank transactions have been recovered which link the crime to Saraswathi".
The temple official was hacked to death in his office at Kanchipuram. The police chief said 14 people were arrested in connection with the murder, including two whose questioning led the authorities to believe that Saraswathi "played an important role in the murder".
