Appeal for calm after synagogue attack
|
|
Australia's Jewish community has appealed for calm after a Sydney
synagogue was attacked in the latest expression of anti-Semitism tied
to the conflict in the Middle East.
Parramatta Synagogue had projectiles hurled at it and blocks of concrete thrown at nearby cars at about 9pm (AEST) on Sunday. Shortly after the incident, witnesses told police they saw a group of
about 10 Middle Eastern men laughing and running down a nearby street.

Would-be Israeli brides leave intimate offering for rabbi
|
|
ERUSALEM (AFP) - Hundreds of young Israeli women hoping to find
themselves a husband have been placing their underwear on the tomb of a
venerated rabbi in the hopes that their marriage prayers will be
answered.
Around 400 pairs of knickers and bras have been collected from the
grilles of the tomb's window or on the branches of nearby trees by the
authorities charged with preserving the final resting place of Rabbi
Yenothan Ben Uziel in the Amuka region of northern Israel, the Maariv daily reported on Sunday.

Israeli Riot Police Storm Gaza Synagogues
|
|
KFAR DAROM, Gaza Strip - Riot troops stormed synagogues in two hardline
Jewish settlements Thursday to evict hundreds of militant holdouts who
locked arms in a human chain and pelted soldiers with acid, oil and
sand, the most violent clashes in Israel's historic Gaza pullout.
By the close of the day, 14,000 unarmed forces had cleared all but
four of Gaza's 21 settlements — including Kfar Darom and Neve Dekalim,
pillars of resistance to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to cede Gaza to the Palestinians and alter the course of Mideast peacemaking.
Dozens of protesters at Kfar Darom sequestered themselves behind
razor-wire on the synagogue roof, at first singing and waving flags,
then attacking soldiers below with their arsenal of caustic liquids and
objects, including paint-filled lightbulbs. Police and soldiers
stripped off their clothes after being doused. Comrades poured water on
their heads and torsos to wash them.

Jewish extremists put ancient death curse on Sharon
|
|
JERUSALEM (AFP) - Jewish extremists opposed to Israel's looming pullout
from the Gaza Strip have dipped into ancient ritual to put an Aramaic
death curse on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, a news website revealed.
In a cemetery ceremony presided over by a rabbi, around 20 radicals
held a "pulsa dinura", which means rod of fire in Aramaic, imploring
God to curse a believed sinner, said the online edition of the Yediot
Aharonot.
The ancient Jewish rite was presided over by rabbi Yossef Dayan at dawn
on Friday in the ancient cemetery of Rosh Pina, in the northern Galilee
region.

France: Jewish cemetery vandalized
|
|
Vandals toppled or smashed dozens of tombstones at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France, city officials said Wednesday.
About 64 of 500 tombstones at the cemetery in the eastern Moselle region were damaged, apparently overnight Monday, officials said. The vandalism was discovered Tuesday.
The incident marked the first time the cemetery in the town of Sarreguemines has been vandalized, though the region has been hit by more serious attacks at other cemeteries.

Boyfriend says he was beaten for dating daughter of chief rabbi
|
|
The wife, daughter and son of Israel's Sephardi chief rabbi, Shlomo Amar, have been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and beating a young man - from their own ultra-Orthodox community - who was dating the rabbi's 18-year-old daughter without his permission.
"It has all the ingredients of a juicy soap opera," the mass-circulation Yediot Aharonot said yesterday. "Forbidden love between a young man and a woman, a kidnapping in the middle of the night to an Arab village, a black sheep who set out to save the honour of his family, and lots of violence."
On Friday, a magistrate remanded the son, Meir, 31, in custody after he admitted the offence. He had abandoned the religious lifestyle as a youth and maintained little contact with his family since. Two Israeli Arabs said to have been his accomplices were also held. The rabbi's wife, Mazal, and daughter, Ayala, are under house arrest.

Sharon: Never forget Nazi killers
|
|
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has told thousands at a march in Poland recalling the Holocaust to "always remember the victims and never forget the murderers."
Jews across the globe Thursday observed Yom Hashoah, the day commemorating the deaths of 6 million Jews in the Holocaust during World War II.
One of the major events took place in southern Poland, where the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp stood. Sharon and thousands of people participated in a March of the Living to commemorate the Holocaust.
Sharon then delivered a speech, later posted on the prime minister's Web site, at the death camp site.

Study traces worldwide Jewish population from Exodus to modern age
|
|
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon likes to quote a theory developed by his close friend, attorney Dov Weissglas, that had the Jews not been expelled by the Romans and suffered nearly 2,000 years of persecution, there would be between 500-800 million Jews living in the world today.
Prof. Sergio Della Pergola of Hebrew University, among the most prominent experts on Jewish demography, calls this estimate "back of an envelope arithmetic," but admits that he too indulges in this occasionally.

Committee on Jewish Law and Standards Rules Against Gay Marriage And Ordination
|
|
NEW YORK - Conservative Judaism's Rabbinical Assembly announced Monday that a key panel has "upheld the biblical injunction against homosexual behavior" — at least for now.
The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards, which sets policy on application of halakha (Jewish law), kept in place a 1992 ruling against both ordination of openly gay rabbis and commitment ceremonies for same-sex couples.

Jews, Mormons to meet over baptizing
|
|
Jewish leaders claim Mormons continue to posthumously baptize Jews and Holocaust victims, and will confront church leaders with a decade of frustration over what they call broken promises.
"We have proof, and we are bringing that," said Ernest Michel, chairman of the New York-based World Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) has long collected names from government documents and other records worldwide for posthumous baptisms. Church members stand in for the deceased non-Mormons, a ritual the church says is required for the dead to reach heaven. The church believes individuals' ability to choose a religion continues beyond the grave

Temple Mt. wall now said stable
|
|
The eastern wall of the Temple Mount is no longer in danger of collapse, following repair work carried out by Jordanian engineers inside the compound, Israel's Antiquities Authority said Tuesday. But not all Israeli experts are convinced.
Earlier this year, Shuka Dorfman, the authority's head, warned that the unstable 2,000-year-old eastern wall of the Temple Mount, further damaged in an earthquake, was in danger of immediate collapse – which could bring down other sections of the ancient compound.
A team of Jordanian engineers, which for the last two years has been working to repair the southern and eastern walls of the Temple Mount, has carried out extensive engineering work over the last month on an underground architectural support of the Temple Mount known as Solomon's Stables, said Ofer Cohen, an engineer with the Israel Antiquities Authority.

Jews predict record level of hate attacks
|
|
Anti-Semitic attacks in Britain will reach record levels this year, say Jewish groups which accuse the government of inaction.
The predicted sharp rise, from 375 last year, appears to be reflected across many European Union countries. Zvi Heifetz, Israel's new ambassador to London, warned last week that combating anti-semitism in Britain would prove a major challenge for the government.
'There is more than one anti-semitic incident a day in Britain. That is a serious problem,' Heifetz said. His comments follow the controversial invitation from his Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, to all French Jews to leave France for Israel immediately to avoid 'wild' anti-semitism.
Leading UK Jewish groups say a new wave of militant Islamic media is fostering anti-semitism among Muslims.
