Khatami blasts wave of 'Islamophobia'
|
|
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- Iran's former president decried a wave of
''Islamophobia'' that he said is being spread in the United States by
fear and hatred of Islam in response to terror perpetrated by Muslims.
''In the crime of 9/11, two crimes were committed,'' Mohammad
Khatami said. ''One was killing innocent people. The second crime was
masking this crime in the name of Islam.''
Under smothering security, with dozens of uniformed police and
plainclothes American security personnel provided by the State
Department, Khatami spoke Friday night at an event sponsored by the
Council on American-Islamic Relations called ''The Dialogue of
Civilizations: Five Years After 9/11.''

La Mirada mosque is vandalized
|
|
LA MIRADA, Long Beach, California, Press-Telegram: When the Muslim
Community Services Inc. mosque on the 15000 block of Imperial Highway
was attacked by vandals Thursday night, mosque president Rezuar Rahman
wasn't too worried.
But when he arrived Monday morning and discovered the mosque had been struck a second time, he began to feel uneasy.
"This morning, when we went there, everyone felt like someone is trying to scare us out of this place," he said.

Palestinians call for confronting Zionist attempts to invade Al-Aqsa Mosque
|
|
GAZA, (KUNA) -- Palestinian Minister of Information Yousef Rezqah on
Wednesday condemned the Israeli Supreme Court's ruling to grant Jewish
extremists' entry to the Holy Al-Aqsa Mosque on Thursday.
Rezqah condemned the media campaigns executed by Jewish extremists,
which threaten to invade and attack Al-Aqsa Mosque, holding the Israeli
government responsible for such court ruling.
He accused the Israeli authorities of keeping their eyes closed
against extremists' attempts to attack the mosque, noting that the
ruling is issued during a period of time that coincides an Israeli war
against the Palestinians and Lebanese people and the anniversary of the
Islamic Al-Isra' and Al-Me'raj event.

Suit says Children Services tried to steer kids from Islam
|
|
Anonymous writes "Suit says Children Services tried to steer kids from Islam Friday, June 02, 2006 By Kevin Mayhood THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH http://tinyurl.com/htbny
A Grandview Heights mother who fought Franklin County Children Services after her daughters were placed in foster care for a year says that the agency tried to steer the children from Islam to Christianity.
Hadiya AbdulSalaam, who was cleared of neglect charges last year, has filed a federal lawsuit in Columbus claiming discrimination and harassment.
"It’s a despicable and horrifying example of abuse of governmental power," said her attorney, Rex Elliot.
John Saros, executive director of Children Services, declined to talk about specific allegations, but said there was "no violation of federal rights as we pursued our effort to provide services to this family." "

China detains Muslim Uighur
|
|
BEIJING, AP - An ethnic Uighur man held by Chinese authorities for more
than two months on conspiracy charges has been tortured and denied food
while in detention, a rights group said Tuesday.
Tudahun Hoshun, a trader, has been held at a detention center in
Shuiding, a town in China's northwestern Muslim region of Xinjiang,
since March 22 on suspicion of "conspiracy to split the state," the
Washington-based Uyghur American Association said in a statement.
It said Hoshun, 31, has been suspended from the ceiling, beaten and
denied food for three days, as punishment for not memorizing the
center's regulations in Chinese, a language he does not speak.

Many Saudis question action against Imam for laptop sermon
|
|
RIYADH, Arab News — A number of Saudis has questioned the decision of
the Ministry of Islamic Affairs to take action against the imam of a
mosque in the Asir province for using his laptop to deliver a sermon.
The Saudis point out that the ministry’s decision to punish the
imam is unfair as it implies a break with modern technology and
complete reliance on more than a 1,400-year-old traditional approach to
the preparation of sermons.
The Saudis were reacting to the ministry’s decision to punish the
imam for bringing his laptop to the mosque in Sarat Abidah in Asir
province and using notes on it for delivering out the Friday sermon.
The congregation was reportedly stunned when the imam used his laptop
to read out the sermon instead of the more traditional hand-written
notes. The imam’s explanation was that he was short of time and brought
the laptop in order to save time.
The ministry, however, is not impressed.

Canadian Muslims denounce story on proposed Iran dress code
|
|
The Canadian Islamic Congress has denounced as "blatantly false and
incompetent" a National Post column by London-based commentator and
Iranian
exile Amir Taheri that ran on Friday (May 19). In it, Taheri claimed Iran
had passed laws that would soon require non-Muslims -- especially
Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians -- to wear identifying colours or
badges.
Based on Taheri fabrication the National Post front page story on May 19,
2006 was "IRAN EYES BADGES FOR JEWS" with a front page photo of "A Jewish
couple wear yellow stars in the Budapest ghetto in 1944."
"To print this alarmist drivel by a proven dubious source represents the
worst of unprofessional journalism," today's CIC statement said. "It was
unprofessional, and dangerous for the National Post to lead a frenzied pack
of major Western newspapers in giving space to this so-called news story,
without checking any of its 'facts' at the source."

Intolerance shows ignorance of Islam
|
|
Eighty
years ago, Marmaduke Pickthall, the British scholar of Islam and
translator of the Quran, wrote: "It was not until the Western nations
broke away from their religious law that they became more tolerant, and
it was only when the Muslims fell away from their religious law that
they declined in tolerance."
Tolerance
was regarded as irreligious in the Christian world, but was an
essential part of Islam, but it is no longer credited to Muslims. Nowadays, the
more "religious" some Muslims regard themselves to be, the less
tolerant they are. The cause is a troubling intellectual decline of the
Islamic civilisation.

School suspends burqa-clad students
|
|
A high school in the German city of Bonn has suspended two Muslim girls
for wearing a burka, an all-enveloping cloak worn by women in central
and south Asia.
The two teenagers who returned to school following the Easter
holidays dressed in burkas were considered to have disturbed the
peaceful running of the school and were handed initial suspensions of
two weeks, a school official said.
The Muslim council of Germany too has criticized the schoolgirls'
decision to attend school in burkas. It said it was necessary for
teachers to have eye contact with pupils in classes.

Sunni sheik calls for jihad against foreign terrorists
|
|
BAGHDAD -- He looks every inch the face of the Iraqi resistance: a
tribal leader from the Sunni badlands, west of Baghdad, who once served
in Saddam Hussein's feared intelligence apparatus.
But Sheik Osama Jadaan's dislike of foreign occupation is
nothing compared with his contempt for Iraq's other intruders: the
foreign jihadists who have killed thousands of his countrymen
indiscriminately. Now, in what coalition commanders hope will mark a
turning of the tide against al Qaeda in Iraq, he has become the first
of the Sunni tribal leaders to declare war on the terrorists to whom,
until now, they have given safe haven.
He is well-placed to do so. His al-Karabla tribe lives in the
desert city of Qaim near the Syrian border in Anbar province, an
insurgent stronghold.

Mosque attack seen as misguided
|
|
The Geraldton Muslim community in mid-west Western Australia believes a
graffiti attack on the city's mosque is due to people with the wrong
idea about their religion.
Earlier this week, vandals spray painted Nazi symbols on the walls of
the mosque, which generally has between 50 to 60 people for Friday
prayers.
